But you are late finishing your physics final, so you are late in arriving at the train station. You drive quickly to Pasco, but just as you reach one end of the platform your train departs. The last car is 30 meters away from you along the platform. You can run at a maximum speed of 8 m/s and the train is accelerating at 1 m/s/s. The platform is 50 meters long and ends with a solid barrier which you can not pass through. Will you catch your train?

30 + 8t   = 1 x t^2/2

0.5t^2 - 8t - 30 = 0

solving this quadratic eqtn we get ,

t = 19.14 sec

d = 1 x 19.14^2/2 = 183.17 m
