Question

(a) What is the ray's angle of incidence at the glass?

The figure below shows a room which is h = 10.5 feet tall and r = 49.5 feet wide. Attached to the ceiling is a piece of glass (with unknown index of refraction) which is 3.0 feet thick. A laser pointer in the bottom left corner is aimed so that the ray which reflects off the glass hits the room's bottom right corner. What is the ray's angle of incidence at the glass? If the ray which refracts into the glass hits the ceiling 30.1 feet away from the left wall, what is the refracted ray's angle of refraction at the glass? What is the glass's index of refraction?

Explanation / Answer

A).

tan(theta) = 24.75/10.5

theta=67.01

B)

If theta is the angle of refraction,
tan(theta) = (30.1 - 24.75)/3 =1.76
theta = 60.48 degrees

c).

sin(60.48 deg) = 0.87,
sin(67.01 deg) = 0.92
Index of refraction = 0.6303/0.3777 = 1.05
