                    In the picture above, a single string is passed through two pulleys. Both ends are attached to a block of mass m = 35 kg. The angle of the                     frictionless incline is ? = 18 degrees. One end of the string is pulling the block vertically up. The other end of the string is pulling the block in a                     direction parallel to the incline. The block is not moving. What is the tension T in the string?

Explanation / Answer

the forces acting on M2 are F and T.

from Newton's second law: F-T=M2*a ...(1)

on M1 acting only T. from Newton's second law:T=M1*a ...(2)

substituting the value of T from equation (2) in equation (1) gives:

F-M1*a=M2*a

a=F/(M1+M2) ,substituting this value in equation (2) gives:

T=F*[M1/(M1+M2)]
