Question
The helicopter view in the figure below shows two people pulling on a stubborn mule. (Take F1 = 110 N and F2 = 90.0 N.)
(a) Find the single force that is equivalent to the two forces shown above. (magnitude and direction)
(b) Find the force that a third person would have to exert on the mule to make the net force equal to zero. (magnitude and direction)
Explanation / Answer
find the x and y components for each vector (F3 refers to the single force we are looking for that makes the net force 0)
Fx1 + Fx2 + Fx3= 0 and Fy1 + Fy2 + Fy3=0
Fx1= F1cos60= 110cos60
Fx2= F2cos75= 90cos75
Fx3= - (Fx1+ Fx2) = -78.2937
Fy1= F1sin60= 110sin60
Fy2= F2sin75 = 90sin75
Fy3= - (Fy1 + Fy2) = - 96.4596
use the pthagorean theorem to find the magnitude which is F3= 124.2350 N
then you can use tan inverse to find the angle. Which should be 50.93 degress but in the third quadrant so looks like 230.93 degrees
NOTE: F3= 124. 23 N and 50.93 degrees answers part a.
