Question

In the figure, three connected blocks are pulled to the right on a horizontal frictionless table by a force of magnitude T3 = 49.4 N. If m1 = 11.0 kg, m2 = 27.0 kg, and m3= 37.5 kg, calculate (a) the magnitude of the system's acceleration, (b) the tension T1, and (c) the tension T2

Explanation / Answer

(a) F = ma

m = m1 + m2 + m3 = 11 + 27 + 35.5 = 73.5 kg
F = 49.4 N
49.4 = 73.5 * a
a = 49 / 73.5 = 0.67 m/s^2

(b) I'm goin to go ahead and guess that we're pulling block 3, which is attached to block 2, which is attached to block 1.
Tension = Force
F = ma
we just found 'a'
for T2, it has to hold m2 and m1, so m = m1 + m2
T2 = (11 + 27) * 0.67 = 25.46 N

for T1, it just has to hold m1
T1 = 11 * 0.67 = 7.37 N

(c) T2 = (11 + 27) * 0.67 = 25.46 N
