Question
When Gregor Mendel was breeding pea plants, he observed that plants with colored seed coats always had colored flowers and colored leaf axils. (Axils are the parts of the plant that attach leaves to stems.) Mendel also observed that pea plants with colorless seed coats always had white flowers and no pigmentation on their axils. One could hypothesize that consistent color is an adaptation to draw the attention of pollinators and seed dispersers. What is an alternative non-adaptive explanation for this consistency in color between flower parts? How would you test whether the adaptive or non-adaptive explanation is more likely?
Explanation / Answer
Non adaptive explanation will be the character or their genotypes.Although the adaptive explanation is drawing attention of the pollinators, non adaptive explanation is their nature of genotype which is more likely.
