Question

Tutorial Exercise Tutorial Exercise Step 1 Step 1 Objects with masses m1 = 13.0 kg and m2 = 8.0 kg are connected by a light string that passes over a frictionless pulley as in the figure below. If, when the system starts from rest, m2 falls 1.00 m in 1.36 s, determine the coefficient of kinetic friction between m1and the table. The free-body diagrams of the two objects in this system are shown below. Note that the accelerations of the two objects have the same magnitude, a, with the acceleration of the object of mass m1 directed horizontally to the right and the acceleration of the object of mass m2directed vertically downward.

Explanation / Answer

y = 1/2 a t^2

1 = 0.5*a*1.36^2

so a = 1.08 m/s^2

sum forces for block 2

m2 g - T = m2 a
T = m2 g - m2 a = 8*(9.81-1.08)=69.84 N

for block 1

T - friction = ma

friction = u m g

69.84 - u*13*9.81 = 13*1.08

u=0.4375
