After investigating the outbreak, it was determined that the students had contaminated their pens, pencils, cell phones and iPODs with Salmonella from the lab class. Genomic comparisons of the Salmonella from the class and Salmonella from the affected persons confirmed that the isolates were genetically identical. Explain your answers fully. 25 points Perform a Risk Assessment to determine how to prevent such lab acquired infections from happening in the future. 10 points a. 0 b. Explanation / Answer

a.

The student training with the laboratory staff is necessary to prevent the acquired infections. The knowledge of epidemiology, pathogenicity and human susceptibility is necessary. Biological risk can be minimized and controlled by the proper protective barriers. vaccines and antibiotics can also be offered to prevent the infections. There should also be a proper surveillance before entering the laboratory.

b.

BSL 2 level is required for the agents that cause potential hazard to the environment and personnel. Salmonella is also handled under the BSL2. This is necessary to handle this agent under BSL 2 as it can cause potential hazard to the personnel. This pathogen can also be handled in the BSL 1 but with some extra precautions that are used to taken in the BSL2.

c.

There are certain precautions that should be used to prevent the salmonella infection.

1. The necessary stationary should be allowed in the laboratory. The used stationary should be passed through the UV filter before and after leaving the laboratory.

2. Use only institution required writing instruments. This practice is also recommended by the CDC to avoid the contamination of pens, notebooks and cell phones.
