Question

Two children pull a snow saucer exerting forces as shown from above in Figure 4.23. Find the acceleration of the 6.00 kg sled. Note that the direction of the frictional force is unspecified; it will be in the opposite direction of the sum of F1 and F2.

Two children pull a snow saucer exerting forces as shown from above in Figure 4.23. Find the acceleration of the 6.00 kg sled. Note that the direction of the frictional force is unspecified; it will be in the opposite direction of the sum of F1 and F2. Magnitude

Explanation / Answer

F1 = 10cos45 i + 10sin45 j

F2 = 8cos30 i - 8sin30 j

F1 + F2 = 14i + 3.1 j

magnitude = sqrt(14^2 + 3.1^2) = 14.33 N

direction = arctan(3.1/14) = 12.5 degrees

hence

acceleration = net force/mass = 14.33 - 7.5/6 = 1.13 m/s2

direction = 12.5 degrees. (above x axis)
