Question

a. Calculate the maximum height above the roof reached by the rock. b. Calculate the magnitude of the velocity of the rock just before it strikes the ground. c. Calculate the horizontal distance from the base of the building to the point where the rock strikes the ground. A man stands on the roof of a building of height 13.3m  mand throws a rock with a velocity of magnitude 32.9m/s  m/s at an angle of 34.2 ? degree above the horizontal. You can ignore air resistance. Calculate the maximum height above the roof reached by the rock. Calculate the magnitude of the velocity of the rock just before it strikes the ground. Calculate the horizontal distance from the base of the building to the point where the rock strikes the ground.

Explanation / Answer

a) H = (V*sin34.2)^2/ 2g = 17.45 m

b) V2y^2 - V1y^2 = 2*(- g(*(-h)

V2y^2 - (32.9*sin34.2)^2 = 2*9.81*13.3

V2y = 24.55 m/s..........V2x = V*cos 34.2 = 27.21 m/s

magnitude = V2 = sqrt(V2y^2+V2x^2) = 36.65 m/s

c) -h = V1y*T- 0.5*g*T^2

-13.3 = 18.49*T - 4.9*T^2

T = 4.39 s

R = Vx*T = 32.9*cos34.2*4.39 = 119.46 m
