In a local bar, a customer slides an empty beer mug down the counter for a refill. The height of the counter is 1.38 m. The mug slides off the counter and strikes the floor2.20 m from the base of the counter. With what velocity did the mug leave the counter? Does the time required for the mug to hit the floor depend on its initial horizontal velocity? m/s What was the direction of the mug's velocity just before it hit the floor?

Explanation / Answer

A)in vertical using h = ut + at^2 /2

1.38 = 0 + 9.8t^2 /2

t =0.531 sec

d = vt

2.20 = v x 0.531

v =4.15 m/s

b) vy = u + at = 0 + 9.8 x 0.531 =5.2 m/s

vx = v = 4.15

direction = tan-1(5.2/4.15) =51.40 degrees
