A contestant in a winter games event pushes a 43.0 kg block of ice across a frozen lake as shown in Figure 4.29(a). The coefficient of static friction is 0.1 and the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.03.

A contestant in a winter games event pushes a 43.0 kg block of ice across a frozen lake as shown in Figure 4.29(a). The coefficient of static friction is 0.1 and the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.03. Calculate the minimum force F he must exert to get the block moving. What is its acceleration once it starts to move, if that force is maintained?

Explanation / Answer

a) F cos25 = us*(Fsin25 + mg) = 0.1*Fsin25 + 0.1*43g

F 0.9063 = 0.0423F + 42.14

so F = 48.77 N

b) F cos25 - uk*(Fsin25 + mg) = ma

44.2 - 0.618 - 12.642 = 43a

so a = 0.73 m/s^2
