Question

Hi i need help with some extra credit in Physics class, its on a lab assignment called "Phet tutorial Masses and Springs".

http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/mass-spring-lab

http://www.physicsmastered.com/phet-tutorial-masses-springs/

1. What is the average spring constant of spring #1? N/m

2. How far would a spring with spring #1's constant be extended with a force of 16 N?

3. How much force would be required to stretch a spring with k = 12N/m a displacement of 3.6 meters?

4. If a spring stretched 0.20m when a 200 gram mass was hung from it, what is the spring's spring constant in N/m?

5. What is the mass of the green unknown mass in kilograms?

6. What is the mass of the yellow unknown mass in kilograms?

7. What is the mass of the red unknown mass in kilograms?

8. What is the acceleration due to gravity (g) on the Moon ?

9. Calculate the percent error of the lunar gravity calculation. Use 1.6 m/s2 as the acceptedvalue.

Explanation / Answer

When a weight of F is attached to a spring of 'k' spring constant, it will be streched by 'x'

F = k*x

1) k1 = 9.8 N/m

2) x = F/k = 16/9.8 = 1.63 m = 163 cm

3) F = k*x = 12 * 3.6 = 43.2 N

4) k = (0.2*9.8 / 0.2) = 9.8 N/m

5) Green weight = 70 g = 0.07 Kg

6) Yellow Weight = 0.15 Kg

7) Red Weight = 300 g = 0.3 Kg

8) Moon Gravity = 1.63 m/s^2

9) Percent Error = 2 %
