Question

Chiana steps off of her cat tree. (Height: 1.8 m) If she starts falling from rest and her mass is 4.5 kg:

Chiana steps off of her cat tree. (Height: 1.8 m) If she starts falling from rest and her mass is 4.5 kg: How much work does gravity do on Chiana as she falls? How long does Chiana take to fall? What is Chiana's speed just before she hits the ground? m/s What is Chiana's kinetic energy just before she hits the ground? J What would have been her kinetic energy just before landing if she had made the same jump in our vacation home on the Moon? (gmoon=1.6 m/s) J

Explanation / Answer

1. work done = F *s = (mg)*h = 4.5*9.8*1.8=79.38

2. time take will be

s=ut+1/2*at^2

1.8=0+0.5*9.8*t*t

=>t=sqrt(1.8*2/9.8)=0.606 sec

3. speed will be

v=u+at

v=0+9.8*0.606=5.94 m/s

4. kinrectic energy will be

ke=0.5 mv^2= 0.5*4.5*5.94*5.94=79.39 J

5. At moon

speed would have been

v^2=u^2+2as

v^2=0+2*1.6*1.8=5.76

so KE will be

0.5 * m * v * v =0.5*4.5*5.76=12.96 J
