Question
Use Kirchoff's rule to solve the circuit below by finding the current flowing through each resistor. please be sure to indicate (on the circuit diagram) the magnitude and direction of the current flowing through each resistor.
Show the following steps in your work:
2.) choose a particular junction and write down the junction rule in terms of the appropriate variables
3.) Remember Kirchoff's Rule #2- the change in potential is equal to zero if you travel along any loop in your circuit, provided to return to the same point. Apply this rule to two different loops of your choosing and write down the expressions you derive
Explanation / Answer
initally consider all currents flowing to the left
then I1 + I2 + I3 = 0
top loop
-300 I1 + 5 + 75 I2 = 0
so I1 = (5 + 75 I2)/300
bottom loop
-20 I3 + 10 + 75 I2 = 0
I3 = (10 + 75 I2)/20
then
(5 + 75 I2)/300+ I2 + (10 + 75 I2)/20=0
I2 = -0.103 A
which means I2 flow to the right
I1 = -0.009166 A
which means I1 flows to the right
I3 = 0.1125 A which means I3 flows to the left
