Question

Could someone please help me out? I have solved all the other pages but for some reason I cant figure this one out.

The circuit at right consists of a bulb in series with an electrical "black box." The following are possible contents for the "black box." All the bulbs are identical. Box C consists of a single piece of connecting wire. Suppose that each of the five boxes is placed, in turn, into the circuit. (Only one box is in the circuit at a time.) Draw the appropriate five circuit diagrams below (show the contents of the boxes in place of the box itself). Use the model that we have developed to rank the five circuits according to the brightness of the indicator bulb in those circuits. Rank the boxes according to their equivalent resistance. Explain. (Do not calculate the resistance of each network; use the model instead.)

Explanation / Answer

b. C>A>E>B>D

c. C<A<E<B<D

If you can work out part c, then you can use it to find part b

Basically since the indicator lamp and the box are connected in series across the source, the source voltage will be divided between them in the ratio of their resistances. Hence lower the resistance of the box, lower the potential difference across it, and hence higher the potential difference across the indicator lamp.

If the p.d. across the lamp is more, it will glow brighter
