In the circuit of the figure, the 5.0 ? resistor is removed and replaced by a resistor of unknown resistance R. When this is done, an ideal voltmeter connected across the points b and creads 1.9 V. (Figure 1) A.Find the current in the circuit. B.Find the resistanceExplanation / Answer
-8+1.4i+5i+1.6i+16+9i = 0
i = -8/17= -0.47A
i = 0.47A(anticlockwise)
current in 9 ohms = 0.47*9=4.23V
new voltage in 9 ohms = 1.9 V
new current = 1.9/9 = 0.211 A
the resistance is
-8+(R+1.6+1.4+9)(-0.211)+16 = 0
(12+R)(-0.211)= -8
12 + R = 8/0.211
12+R = 38
R = 38-12 = 26 ohms
