Question

The spring scale in the diagram below reads 10.5N.

A)If the cart moves toward the right with an acceleration also toward the right of 3.25 m/s^2, what is the mass of the cart? Show your calculations and explain. Friction is so small that it can be ignored.

B)The force applied to the cart is still 10.5N but friction cannot be ignored. The cart now moves toward the right with a constant velocity. What are the magnitude and direction of the frictional force? SHow your calculations and reasoning.

C) The force applied to the cart is still 10.5N and the friction cannot be ignored. The cart now moves toward the right with an acceleration also toward the right of 1.75 m/s^2. What are the magnitude and direction of the frictional force? Show your calculations and explain.

The spring scale in the diagram below reads 10.5N.

Explanation / Answer

A)

F1 = 10.5

As F = ma

So, m = F/a = 10.5/3.25 = 3.23 kg <------answer

B)

As the velocity of cart is constant, so there is no acceleration, thus there is no force

So, force of friction must be equal and opposite to F1

So, friction = F1 = 10.5 N <------magnitude

direction = opposite to F1 = towards left

C)

As the two forces act on the body,

Thus , F1-f = ma <----here f = friction force, m = mass, a=accleration=1.75

So, 10.5-f = 3.23*1.75

So, f = 4.85 N <------magnitude

dirction = toweards left
