Question
In the Zener Diode regulator shown, the series resistance R1 = 1000 ohms, VDC = 25V(not 12) and Vz= 15V(not 9.1). The maximum current through the Zener is 150 mA. (a) over what range of R2 values is the regulator useful? (b) for a constant load R2= 5000 ohms , over what range of input voltages can regulation be achieved?
In the Zener Diode regulator shown, the series resistance R1 = 1000 Ohms , VDC = 25V(not 12) and Vz= 15V(not 9.1). The maximum current through the Zener is 150 mA. (a) over what range of R2 values is the regulator useful? (b) for a constant load R2= 5000 Ohms , over what range of input voltages can regulation be achieved?Explanation / Answer
a) total current in the circuit = Iz + IL
--> 25/(R2+1000) = Iz + 15/R2
given max Iz = 150mA then 25/(R2+1) = 150 + 15/R2 ( Here R2 is in Kilo ohms)
R2 min is 0 and max is 1.5Kilo ohms .
b) Let input voltage be equal to V
--> V/(5+1) = Iz + 15/5
--> (V/6) - 3 = Iz
min Iz=0 and max Iz=150mA
--> Range of V is 18V to 18.9V .
