Question
A 5 ounce swallow (m=0.142 kg) is carrying a 1 lb coconut (m=0.454 kg). The air speed of an unladen swallow is about 11m/s, and here we will assume that the laden swallow wants to maintain the same speed. This speed would produce a friction force of approximately 1 N on the bird. On average, what magnitude force would the bird need to produce with its wings to maintain a constant horizontal speed?
The answer is 5.93 N. But i have no idea how they got that answer..could someone please explain this to me?
Thank you!
Explanation / Answer
It's not a question of where it grips it! It's a simple question of weight ratios! A five ounce bird could not possibly carry a one pound coconut!
