Question

Water flows steadily from an open tank into a pipe as shown in the figure. The elevation of the top of the tank is 14.2 m, and the elevation at the pipe is 3.00 m. The initial cross-sectional area of the pipe (at point 2) is 6.00?10?2 m^2; and at where the water is discharged from the pipe (at point 3), it is 2.40?10?2 m^2. The cross-sectional area of the tank is very large compared with the cross-sectional area of the pipe.

What is the gauge pressure p_{ m gauge} at point 2?

Please help me, i don't know how to use the fluid equation right!!!

Explanation / Answer

fluid eq

gh+0.5v^2+P= constant

as it is very large hence V1= 0

V2=2.5(V3)

P3=P1= atm pressure

writing eq for 1 2 and 3 positions

g(14.2)+0.5(0)+P1=g(3.00)+0.5(V^2)+P2=g(3.00)+0.5(6.25V^2)+P1

from these equations solving them gives

P2=9.4g+P1=192120 pascals
