Question
Chapter 1521) A submarine called the Deep View 66 is currently being developed to take 66 tourists at a time on sightseeing trips to tropical coral reefs. According to guidelines of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), to be safe for human occupancy the Deep View 66 must be able to withstand a pressure of 10.0 N per square millimeter. (a) To what depth can the Deep View 66 safely descend in seawater? (b) if the submarine is used in freshwater instead, is its maximum safe depth greater than, less than, or the same as the seawater? Explain.
Explanation / Answer
P=F/a= 10/10^-6 meter^2 = 10^7 pa a>so the depth h allowed = 10^7 pa/(9.8*1000) =1020.4 meters b> if the submarine is used in fresh water it will ensure more safety because the density of the fresh water is less than the density of sea water so at the same depth the pressure will be less in fresh water than the sea water so the submarine remains more safer in the freshwater
