Question

Ann needs a blood transfusion. Ann has blood type A-. Three of Ann's friends have offered to donate blood for her transfusion. Marie has B and Rh antigens on her RBCs, Katie has A and Rh antigens on her RBCs and Mark has A antigens on his RBCs. Based on this information answer the following (number your answers).

List the blood type of each friend

List the type of antibody of each person including Ann (assume everyone has been exposed to Rh factor)

Explain who would be the best donor and why (be specific)

Explanation / Answer

Ans 1) The blood type of each friend

Marie – The blood group is B Rh+ where the antigens are B and Rh antigens on the surface of RBC.

Katie – The blood group is A Rh+ where the antigens are A and Rh on the surface of the RBC.

Mark – The blood group is only A Rh- as it is the only antigen and no Rh antigen present.

Ans 2) Type of Antibody:

Ann – In this the antibodies present are B antibodies and Rh antibodies.

Marie – In this antibodies present are A antibodies.

Katie – In this the antibodies present are B antibodies

Mark – The antibodies are B antibodies and Rh antibodies.

Ans 3) Ann is A negative and hence she does not have Rhesus and have B negative as the antibodies. She can take blood only from A and O negative.
