Question

Two skydivers, an 80 kg guy in black and a 60 kg girl in brilliant white are parachuting down. At time t=0 the girl is at point A, her velocity in the z- direction is negligible as an updraft cancels out gravity, but she has a velocity v=1.33 mm/sec in the x-direction due to a brief gust of wind. The guy is in exactly the same situation except 20m directly below her. Just then an experimentalist miles away accidentally activates a mechanism which creates a gigantic 1 Tesla magnetic field in the y-direction (see figures below). While falling, she has amassed a static charge of 0.8 mC, and he has amassed a static charge of 1.33 mC. A tower with a circular roof entirely made up of a pool of radius 20m is 70m away from A in the x-direction and 100m lower. The rich owner of the tower has introduced to the pool a crocodile which likes to stay at the exact center of the pool. Assuming the croc can only move with constant velocity and that it is almost blind so that it only sees each skydiver 10 sec before he/she falls in the pool, find, ignoring gravity throughout this problem:

Explanation / Answer

A) Since gravity is to be ignored, and the croc is 100m lower, the man and woman will never drop down as they will have a z-component velocity equal to 0m/s and an object at rest will remain so without a net external force acting on it. B) As per answer above, they will miss the tower without the influence of gravity.
