Question
10. Nucleotides are required for cell growth and replication. You are given a mutant human cell line in which a key enzyme necessary for making adenine nucleotide is mutated (a deletion in the gene), hence it can't make this nucleotide. You can grow this mutant cell line if you provide adenine nucleotide in the medium. You also have a wild type human cell line that can make adenine nucleotide. Design an experiment using these two cell lines to demonstrate that DNA is the genetic material in human cells. Hint: Think along the lines of Avery, MacLeod and McCarty experiment that was discussed in class.Explanation / Answer
Ans- it can be achieved by using the template DNA from the wild type cell line. The mutant cell line can be transformed in wild type cell line by providing the missing sequence of adenine producing gene. After transformation that mutant gene will no longer remain mutant but will be transformed into a normal wild type gene which will be able to produce the adenine normally.
