Question

i can calculate force on a point charge due to the dipole.

Yet, when i use F=(p dot grad) E, to calculate force on the dipole due to the point charge, my answer does not agree with the force on a point charge due to the dipole.

Could anyone please show me how force on the dipole due to point charge should be calculated?

My attempt was

p = p in y direction.

p dot grad = p d/dy

E= q/(x^2+y^2)(cos theta x hat + sin theta y hat)

p (d/dy) E and evaluate that at theta = 0 the answer is wrong.

We do know that the force should be acting in theta hat direction

Explanation / Answer

Yes the attempt is right but you are missing the negative direction
