Only need help with the last 2 questions!! Please explain thanks!!!!

In the figure a very thin spherical plastic shell of radius 15 cm carries a uniformly-distributed negative charge of -5 nC (-5e-9 C) on its outer surface. An uncharged solid metal block is placed nearby. The block is 10 cm thick, and the left surface of the block is 10 cm away from the surface of the sphere. ?

Which of the diagrams below best represents the charge distribution on the metal block

Refer to the arrows below when answering questions about directions. Which arrow best indicates the direction of shell ,

the electric field at the center of the metal block, due only to the charged plastic shell?

Which arrow best indicates the direction of block , the electric field at the center of the metal block, due only to the charges on the metal block?

Calculate the magnitude of block , the electric field at the center of the metal block, due only to the charges on the block itself. (Hint: make sure you use the appropriate distance in your calculation.) |block| = N/C

What is the magnitude of the net electric field at the center of the metal block? |net| = N/C

Explanation / Answer

ans. since the distinct advantage of being able to view fig. 14.70, you should realize that without telepathy, we cannot determine which side of the sphere the block is on. 'The left surface of the block' could be the side away from the sphere, in which case the other side would be touching the sphere, OR The left side could be facing the sphere, which would put the other side 20 cm from the sphere. Assuming the later, the sphere will induce a + charge on the near side of the block. Maybe it's equal to the charge on the sphere; An equal - charge will be induced on the far side of the block. Now you have a + charge, a - charge and the area they are distributed over (=.10² m²). The field will be uniform and ? to the near and far faces. E = s/eo = (5E-9/.01)/8.85E-12 = 5.649E4 N/C
