Question
Which of the following statements about RNA processing is NOT correct?
Introns are transcribed but not translated.
Exons are transcribed and translated.
Some of the food preservatives convert to nitrous acid after digestion. Nitrous acid is a chemical mutagen that:
Produces a frameshift mutation
Produces a mutation that cannot be repaired
Ionizes DNA bases
Forms thymine dimers
Breaks chromosomes
None of the above
Which of the following statements about RNA processing is NOT correct?
A.Introns are transcribed but not translated.
B.Exons are transcribed and translated.
C. Due to a mutation in gene A, amino acid ‘Glu’ in position 15 of enzyme A (the wild polypeptide) is replaced by ‘Ala’. Individuals who are heterozygous for the mutant allele (Aa) don’t have any phenotypic alterations. Based on this observation, which of the following is correct about this mutation?Explanation / Answer
Q. 1
Only 2 options are visible and both of them are correct. You may try to upload this photo again with all the options for this question. Now coming to the explanation of these 2 options. Introns are the non coding region of RNA and exons are coding region. When RNA is produced from DNA, the process is called Transcription. A RNA contains both intron and exon before splicing. So, introns and exon both are transcribed but only exon can encode protein - can translate the proteins. Introns cannot translate the protein.
Q2. No option is visible. Try uploding it again.
Q3. It produces a mutation that cannot be repaired. The bases are chemically changed into other molecules. For eg, adenine converted into hypoxanthine, cytosine converted into uracil and guanine changes into xanthine by several chemical mechanisms. Now, adenine usually pairs with thymine but when it is converted into hypoxanthine, it binds to cytosine. So, all the sequence is altered and this is irreversible.
