Question
Pre-Lab Questions
Explain how the nervous system works with each of the other human body systems.
Hypothesize why some human body functions like breathing and heartbeat are an unconscious, involuntary effort.
Relate dendrites to axons and synapses.
Experiment 1: Observation of the Nervous System
Label the arrows for A and B in the slide image, based on your observations from the experiment figures. (Remember the picture is in your Lab Manual; this file just has the questions!)
a.
b.
Hypothesize what the neuroglial cells function is. Support your hypothesis using scientific evidence.
Provide a hypothesis explaining how the axon and the dendrites affect the function of a neuron.
Experiment 2: Limits and Capabilities of the Eye
Include your hypotheses from Part 2: Step 2.
Examine Table 2 (which is in your Lab Manual!) According to the table, how “old” are your eyes?
Identify the two primary fluids found within the eye. Which one of these fluids provides nutrients to the rest of the eye? Hypothesize why this is important.
What did you see after you stared at the yellow triangle, and then looked at the white paper? What happened when you looked at the blue triangle?
Use scientific reasoning to explain what is happening when you stare at the image, then transfer your gaze to a blank sheet of paper.
Experiment 3: Skin Response
Which of these areas (forearm, back of the neck, index finger, and the back of the hand) contains the most touch receptors? Why is this useful?
What was the sensation for each hand when you placed them in the room temperature water?
Experiment 4: Brain Mapping
Name and describe the function of three areas of the brain.
Hypothesize why major functions of the human body are regulated by specialized parts of the brain.
Experiment 5: Microscope Supplement
Questions:
Draw the neuron as you saw it under the microscope.
Label following structures on your drawing: cell body, axon, dendrite, neuroglia.
Explanation / Answer
Explain how the nervous system works with each of the other human body systems.
The signals pass through long extension, the axon, which is almost one meter long. There are two parts in the nervous system: the central nervous system and the the peripheral nervous system. The central nervous system would be including the nerves and the spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system includes all other nerves. These two systems are responsible in coordinating body functions and movements.
Hypothesize why some human body functions like breathing and heartbeat are an unconscious, involuntary effort.
These systems are regulated by the autonomic nervous system which is also the vegetative nervous system. This system regulates body processes that cannot be regulated in a conscious manner. The functions of breathing as well as the metabolic processes would be receiving signals from the autonomic nervous system. These signals are passed from the brain to the body, as a result of which there would be quick alteration in the body for the changes to be adapted.
Relate dendrites to axons and synapses.
There Are specialised projection in the neurons which are known as axons and dendrites. The dendrites would be bringing information to cell body. The axons would be carrying information in the opposite direction from the cell body. There is a flow of information from one neuron to another and this takes place across synapses. There are small gaps that separate neurons .
