Question

If possible, identify E, the exposure(s) under study; O, outcome(s) of interest; state whether the study design described is case report, case-series, ecological, cross-sectional, cohort, or case-control. Persons diagnosed with new-onset Lyme disease were asked how often they walk through woods, use insect repellant, wear short sleeves and pants, etc. Twice as many patients without Lyme disease from the same physician's practice were asked the same questions, and the responses in the two groups were compared. Exposure Outcome: Study Design:

Explanation / Answer

Lyme disease is caused by spirochetal bacteria from thr Borellia genus. They spread through ticks which feed on both birds and humans. This is characterised by a tyoical bulls eye pattern of rash on the skin.

The abovementioned study is a case control study wherein two individual grouos of people are compared on the basis of differing outcome and on the basis of outcomes.

The exposure under study is the no. Of times the people walked through the woods, whether they used insect repellant, and whether they wore short sleeves and pants. If they walled through woods often with repellant with shirt pants, they have a higher chamce of geeting Lyme diease as they are exposed more to the carrying agent. For the control, people who walked less frequently through the woods, used repellant and wore full sleeves clothes would have been considered.

Outcome, history, medication, test reports would be monitored from the affected and unaffected group from the same physician. The observer should be unbiased. The whole course of disease should be monitored.
