Question
hi please help with this bio question
5. Yeast cells can grow either aerobically or anaerobically and require the same amount of ATP in either case. Glucose is the preferred carbon source for yeast. Given this information and your knowledge of the energy-generating processes, explain the following observation: (6 points) Yeast cells consume a steady and high amount of glucose when growing without oxygen but when oxygen is added, glucose consumption quickly drops and then is maintained at the lower rate.
Explanation / Answer
Given that when Yeast cells can grow either aerobically or anaerobically and require the same amount of ATP.
In case of aerobic respiration, 36 ATP produced when 1 molecule of glucose is completely oxidized.
In case of anaerobic respiration, 2 ATP molecules are produced when 1 molecule of glucose is oxidized into two molecules of alcohol.
SO, in case of anaerobic respiration, yeast need to use 18 glucose molecules more as compared to aerobic respiration, to produce the same amount of ATP.
So yeast cells consume a steady and high amount of glucose when growing without oxygen but when oxygen is added, glucose consumption quickly drops and then is maintained at the lower rate.
