Question
4) Imagine that you have engineered a set of genes, each encoding a protein with a pair of conflicting signal sequences that specify different cellular compartments. If the genes were expressed in a cell, predict where the proteins produced from these genes would accumulate. Explain your reasoning.
- signals for import into the nucleus and import into the ER
- signals for import into mitochondria and retention in ER
- signals for import into the ER and import into lysosomes
Explanation / Answer
Answer: signals for import into the nucleus and import into the ER
Nucleus - The protein which has Nulcear localization Signal which is nothing but a short stretch of mono or bipartite amino acid sequence are imported into the Nucleus. These signal sequence are found on the protein (synthesized in the cytoplasm) to be transported to the Nucleus.
ER - ER signal peptide. It is the signal sequence found at the N terminal of translated polypeptide and which are recognised SRP and are transported to the Rough ER for proceeding the translation. The translated polpetide enters into the lumen of ER. The signal peptide is then cleaved by Signal Peptidase in the lumen of ER.
