Question

4.Alissa recently ran the Boston Marathon. She averaged an 8 minute per mile pace and she weighs 155 lbs.

a. What would her approximate VO2 be if the course was completely flat? i. If the course was completely flat, then her approximate VO2 would be 43.7 mL/kg/min.

b. During Heart Break Hill on the course race the incline changes to a 3.3%, what would her approximate VO2 be if she trained at this incline?

i. At an incline of 3.3%, her approximateVO2 would increase to 49.67 mL/kg/min. c. If it took Alissa 3 hours to run the flat portion of the course how many calories did she burn running this portion of the marathon? i.

d. If it took Alissa 27 minutes to run up Heart Break Hill, how many calories did she burn running this portion of the marathon? Assuming it took her 3 hours and 27 minutes to run the whole marathon how many total calories did she expend?

e. Calculate the weekly calories Alissa burned during training 4x a week for 45 minutes on a flat road and 2x a week for 30 minutes on an incline.

Explanation / Answer

d.

VO2 when the surface is flat = 43.7 mL/kg/min.

Now, 1 MET = 3.5 ml/kg/min
So, VO2 is = 43.7/3.5 MET
= 12.48 MET

Which equals to = (12.48 *3.5 * 70.3)/200 = 15.36 kcal/min (155lbs = 70.3 kg)

Alissa burnt 15.36 * 27 = 414.73 kcal while running up to Heart Break Hill.

She burned (207 * 15.36) = 3179.52 kcal to run the whole marathon

e. Vo2 in inclination = 49.67 mL/kg/min = (49.67 * 70.3)/200 = 17.46 kcal/min

Weekly calories burnt = (45*4*15.36) + (30*2*17.46) = 2764.8 + 1047.6 = 3812.4 kcal
