PRACTICE IT
Use the worked example above to help you solve this problem. An Alaskan rescue plane drops a package of emergency rations to stranded hikers, as shown in the figure. The plane is traveling horizontally at 41.0 m/s at a height of 1.50 102 m above the ground.
(a) Where does the package strike the ground relative to the point at which it was released?
m
(b) What are the horizontal and vertical components of the velocity of the package just before it hits the ground?
horizontal m/s
vertical m/s
(c) Find the angle of the impact.
Explanation / Answer
distance of free fall h=0.5g*t^2=186m, hence time of free fall t=v(2h/g); ?Answer: final vertical speed v= -g*t =-v(2gh) = ?Answer: horizontal (and constant) component of speed is u=46 m/s during time t of free fall; ?Answer: horizontal position when it strikes is x=u*t =u*v(2h/g) = Angle of impact is the angle off the ground that something came in on. Imagine drawing an X on the ground, then standing right above it and dropping a ball straight onto it. The angle of impact there would be 90 degrees. Now imagine standing 10 feet away and throwing the ball directly at the X. The angle of impact will be something smaller than 90 degrees. Another way to put it is to call it the angle of incidence of an object impacting another one. I have included a wiki reference to "angle of incidence".
