Question

A particle of charge = +5.5 C is released from rest at the point x = 55 cm on an x axis. The particle begins to move due to the presence of a charge Q that remains fixed at the origin.
(a) What is the kinetic energy of the particle at the instant it has moved 40 cm if Q = +15 C?
______J

(b) What if Q = -15 C?
______J

Explanation / Answer

if Q=+15 uC let q1=5.5 uC then force of interaction between Q and q1 will be repulsive and q1 will move away from Q> so final distance from Q after it has moved 40cm is 55+40=95 cm so kinetic energy=change in potential energy=k*q1*Q*[(1/0.55)-(1/0.95)]=0.56842 J (b).if Q=-15 uC let q1=5.5 uC then force of interaction between Q and q1 will be attractive and q1 will move towards from Q> so final distance from Q after it has moved 40cm is 55-40=15 cm so kinetic energy=change in potential energy=k*q1*Q*[(1/0.55)-(1/0.15)]=3.6 J
