(only one). e-chice questions (24 points, each with rdedlikage experiments, Drosophila was used. Which one of the following can be (A) Fruit flies are easy to grow 1 ) In Morgan's s the most compelling reason for the use of pea in his experiment? rosophila does not have as many genes as humans ruit fly has a very short life cycle and many varieties are available. (C) F (D) None of the above t If 90 rlants from the segregating progeny derived from a self-cross of a heterozygous plant in the nrogeny will show the recessive

Explanation / Answer

Thomas Hunt Morgan is very well known for his linkage experiments which proposed and confirmed that the genes which are present on the same chromosome will not be separated during cell division, instead, they tend to stick together in the new daughter cells. If the genes were present on two different chromosomes then they independently get sorted during the process of cell division. Drosophila was the model organism used in the linkage experiments of Morgan as they have a short lifespan meaning many generations can be studied, can be easily cultivated at room temperature, The number of chromosomes in Drosophila is 4 and that of pea plant is 14. If one would want to extensively study the linkage then an organism with complexity in its genome is better. Hence the compelling reason for choosing pea plant would be option B. Drosophila does not have as many genes as humans.
