Question
Management and Policy Alternatives to Address HABs: How have federal and state agencies responded to the HABs problem in Lake Erie? What other agencies and organizations are working to address HABs? Is there widespread cooperation among businesses, environmental agencies and communities? What are the options for community water supplies that are impacted by HABs? (How can these pollutants be removed from the water?) What are the management alternatives for both rural and urban lands to decrease nutrient runoff? Do regulations and/or policies exist to address HABs? If so, are they working? Why or why not? What types of education programs should the community consider to encourage land owners to adopt best management practices to decrease nutrient runoff?Explanation / Answer
Lake Erie became very polluted in 1960 and 70s due to heavy industries situated in cities and shores. The beaches were contaminated with bacteria and the fish were contaminated with industrial waste.
Federal and state agencies represented to HAB problem in Lake Erie :
The state of Ohio convenes a lake Erie phosphorous task force in 2007 in response to increased harmful algal bloom in the early 2007.
In 2012 , the US and Canadian government signed an updated binational great lakes water quality agreement.
Reduce nutrient application on frozen / snow covered ground
Reduce open water disposal of degraded material.
Develop an integrated monitoring , modeling, tracking and reporting network for Lake Erie.
To reduce the run off, a small hill covered with grass and other plants can be built that will divert run off in to the lake. And it is important to have manure management plan.
Algal bloom is due to cyanophyceae which grow enormously in phosphorous enriched water bodies and they release cyanotoxins and deplete oxygen content in the water body.
The public water system should detect cyanotoxins in raw water and should follow treatment and there has to be incresed monitoring , changes in treatment strategies and public health notification like- 'Do not drink'.
