Question
6) (1 pt) On the planet Rama, the DNA is of six nucleotide types: A, B, C, D, E and F. A and E are called marzines, C and D are orsines and E and F are pirines. The following rules are valid for all Raman DNAs: total marzines-total orsines total purines Propose a general model for the structure of Raman DNA. 7) (3 pts) Indicate whether each of the following descriptions about the structure of double- stranded DNA is true or false. If false, explain why. a) A+T-G+C b) A-G and CT c) A/T-C/G d) T/A-C/G e) A+G-C+T f C/A-T/GExplanation / Answer
6)The proposed model for general structure of Raman DNA is a triple helix. Where three strands of DNA coil over each other such that each marzine interacts with a orsine which bonds to a purine or a different permutation of the same. In this way the condition Total marzines = Total orsines = Total purines will he fulfilled. Also each A would mutually bind with C and E. Each C woth A and E. And each E with A and C. Similarly B, D and F will also mutually bind. This will take care of the second rule A=C=E and B=D=F
7) a False. A + G = C + T as number of purines = Number of pyrimidines. As each purine covalently bonds with a pyrimidine. Hence the statement is false
b False. A=T and G=C, since these two form a nucleotide base pair. Not A, G and C, T
c True. A=T, hence A/T=1
And C=G, therefore C/G=1
Using both equations. A/T=C/G= 1
d also T/A = 1 ( From the same equation T=A)
Hence T/A= C/G = 1
e) True. Purines (A+G) = Pyrimidines (C+T)
As each purine covalently base pairs with a purimidine
f) False. A/T=G/C is the correct statement.
