Question

In the Traveling Waves experiment, you use a reflectionless splitter to connect the function generator, oscilloscope, and coaxial cable. The purpose of this device is to prevent reflections by ensuring that each component (function generator, oscilloscope, and cable) "sees" an effective 50 Ohm termination. The schematic of the device is shown below. Inside the box are three resistors connected in a "T" configuration. Calculate the values of the resistors R so that the function generator is connected to an effective 50 Ohm load at the input of the splitter. You can assume that the cable and oscilloscope both have 50 Ohm input impedances.

Explanation / Answer

the R ohm connected to the 50 ohms cable is in series with it. so its equivalent resistance=r1=50+r ohms the R ohm connected to the 50 ohms oscilloscope is in series with it. so its equivalent resistance=r2=50+r ohms now r1 and r2 are in parallel. so net equivalent resistance=r1*r2/(r1+r2)=(50+r)/2 so for the function generator to see 50 ohms, r+((50+r)/2)=50 solving for r, we get r=50/3 ohms=16.67 ohms
