Question

Two groups of canoeists meet in the middle of a lake. After a brief visit, a person in canoe 1 pushes on canoe 2 to separate the canoes. Suppose the speeds of the two canoes after they are pushed apart are 0.62 m/s for canoe 1 and 0.48 m/s for canoe 2. If the mass of canoe 1 is 250kg , what is the mass of canoe 2? Express your answer using two significant figures.

Express your answer using two significant figures. m2=kg

Explanation / Answer

initial momentum was 0.
SO by conservation of momentum , momentum after the push should also be 0

m1*v1 +m2*v2 = 0
324*0.62 + m2* (-0.51) = 0
m2 = 393.88 Kg
Answer: 393.88 Kg
