Question
Can someone help me with a movie project I'm working on for Biochemistry please? We have to examine a scene in a movie and discuss what is wrong with the science of the scene. For my project, I am working on the movie I Am Legend with Will Smith. In the movie, he creates a vaccine for the virus using his own blood (he is immune to the virus) and then injects his blood (the "vaccine") into an infected female. This would not be possible, correct? He would have first been exposed to the virus and have the dead antibodies inside his blood? Could he have had the antibodies in his blood because he was immune? Can you literally make a "vaccine" from immune blood and inject it into an infected person curing that person?
Explanation / Answer
To create a vaccine, we need an inactive virus (antigen) which induces immuno response in the body.
Lets say, he was immune to that virus. Its not possible unless he was infected with that virus and his body developed immunity to those viral antigens through producing antibodies.
Yes, its possible, Infective virus could have become inactive with strong antibodies.
But, making a vaccine from immune blood is not possible. To make vaccine we need live viral antigen and then convert them into inactive by genetic changes to their active proteins.
Curing the infected person with immune blood is impossible. Because the infected person has active antigen and lack of antibodies made me sick. So, just injecting immune blood will not work as the vaccine.
