Question

In the figure shown, the boat mass 18.0 kg and dog mass 4.50 kg. The dog's position is initially part of the ship at a distance D = 6.10 m measured from land. The dog begins to move forward. It moves a length d = 2.40 m measured in the boat before it stops. a, how far is the dog from the water's edge the moment it stops? disregard the friction between the boat and the water

Explanation / Answer

lets say the dog is moving with velocity v then boat will start moving with u in opposite direction. Use momentum conservation: 0=mv-Mu --> u=mv/M dog was in movement t=2.4/v seconds, boat was in movement the same time. The distance of the boat is: D=u*t=2.4*m/M=0.6 ---> distance of the dog relative to the shore is 2.4-0.6=1.8 --> the dog will be 6.1-1.8=4.3 meters from the water edge
