Question
NEED HELP IN BIO. PLEASE PROVIDE FULL DETAILED EXPLANATION
1. You become a conservation biologist and for your first job, you are hired to to estimate the number of endangered Island Foxes on California's Santa Cruz Island and to construct a life history table to help with conservation efforts. For your first assignment, you visit the island every year in May and capture adult foxes. You mark them with a PIT tag and release them. You return in July and capture foxes again. You obtain the following data. Estimated Total # Marked and Released (May) 32 30 31 35 # Captured (July) ear # Marked July) 35 32 34 4 20 19 6 6 15 Based on these results, estimate the number of individuals (N.) in the population for each age (complete the last column of the table). Show your work for the first two rows. Based on your findings, what would you include in your report on the conservation status of the island fox?Explanation / Answer
This method is called capture-marking-recapture or Peterson-Lincoln method.
The equation for it is N= C x M / R
Where,
N = Total population estimated number.
M = Total of animals captured and marked in first visit.
C = Total of animals captured in second visit.
R = Number of animals marked that were recaptured in second visit.
So, in first year we have M= 32 , C= 35 and R= 12.
N= (35 x 32) / 12 = 93 . This is the estimated total of foxes.
Year two we have M= 30, C= 32 and R= 11.
N= (32 x 30) / 11 = 87.
They seem quite similar! Now we complete the rest of the table.
3) N = 88
4 N = 90
5) N= 57
6) N = 57
Based on what we find, we would include the decrease in population in the last two years as something to research further. It could be an endagered specie.
