1. In the late 1800’s the Florida East Coast Railroad was established under the direction of Henry Flagler. He was responsible for lengthening the system from Daytona to Biscayne Bay (Miami), which was completed in 1895. The greatest challenge was to extend the railway to Key West. Four thousand men were employed and, it took 7 years to complete. Five hurricanes interrupted, damaged and threatened its completion. At the time, some people called the endeavor “Flagler’s Folly”. Others considered it one of the 7 Wonders of the World considering the engineering innovations that were devised in order to cross over the water to connect all of the islands. The project was finished by 1912 but it was completely destroyed in the hurricane of 1936. Unfortunately, one of South Florida’s natural resources was destroyed in the process because the landscape was subject to substantial excavations. In addition, rapid urban development and new agriculture along the route followed and destroyed the natural Floridian habitat further decreasing this resource. "They" were also exploited by sending them north as a disposable commodity. What is the name of the project going on currently at FTBG to restore the supply of this resource?
