Question
The figure shows a simple representation of a power station, which uses high power lines to deliver electricity to homes. Suppose the current in the line is 200 A and the voltage at the power station is 10,000 V. Also suppose the power line has a total resistance of 15 ?. (i) What is the total power provided by the power station? (ii) The energy loss may be estimated as the ratio of the power used by the line to the total power provided. Calculate the percentage energy loss. (iii) Now suppose we use a 20-step-up transformer to increase the voltage (and decrease the current). In this case calculate the percentage energy loss.
Explanation / Answer
Ptotal=IV= 200*10,000=2MW
percentage energy loss= 2002*15/2*106 *100=30%
Vs/Vp=Ns/Np
Vs/10,000=20
Vs=200,000V
P=IV
I=2*106 /200,000=10A
Percentage energy loss=102*15/2*106= 0.75%
