Ans:- Phagocytosis or cell eating reported first time by Metchnikoff describes the internalization of large particles following particle binding to specific plasma membrane receptors and by the formation of large endocytic vescles the size is generalyy greater than 250nm in diameter called phagosomes. phagocytosis ocur in specialized mammalian cells called macrophages. it is an active and highly regulated process involving cell specicific cell durface receptors and signalling cascades mediated by the Rho-family GTPases.

Functions:-

once the pathogen comes into the blood the antigens present on their surface are recognized and hence the antibodies do get attached to these antigens the phogocytes have receptors on their surface which bind these antigens already attached to these pathogens now the attached pathogen is engulfed by the phagocyte as membrane inwards and thus in this way the pathigen is trapped inside the phagocyte and is called as phagosome which inturn binds the lysosomes which contains the enzymes and hence breaksdown the pathogen.
