Question
26. Stella and Tim's first child, Tonia, is born with 10 fingers, 10 toes, and does not have sickle cell anemia. Tonia grows up and goes to college. Concerned about her carrier status for sickle cel she decides to undergo carrier testing for the Bs allele, and urges her brother, Joe, to do the same The restriction enzyme MstII has been shown to cut a site within the Ba (normal) allele, but the sickle cell mutation destroys the site. The results of the testing from the entire family are shown below Indicate whether each individual is affected, a carrier, or homozygous for the normal allele. a. b. What would an affected persons banding pattern look like? OTL Stella Tim Stella Tona TimJoe Tonin JoeExplanation / Answer
Q.1
Stella and tonia are Homozygous for the normal allele.
Whereas Tim and Joe are carrier.
According to the above statement it is clear that Stella and tonia are not affected by sickle cell anemia. Which means they must be either a carrier or normal individual. As you could see from the banding pattern, the restriction site for Stella and tonia are not destroyed. And hence they are homozygous for normal allele and not the carrier.
Whereas Tim and Joe lacks a restriction site for an allele. But the other allele is functioning normally. You could find two band for them. So they are carrier.
Q.2
If the person is affected then the person would not have the upper and middle band, or upper and lower band, or no band at all. (Upper band represents One allele, Both middle and lower band together represent another allele.)
Affected individual lacks the restriction site for both the allele. Whereas carrier lacks the site in one allele only.
