Question

Jim and Kim are a twenty-something couple with one child. They do not wish to have any more children. Their friend, Tim, in one of his less tactful moments, suggests vasectomy or tubal ligation to “nip the problem in the bud”. Kim is adamantly opposed. “I’m way too young for menopause,” she says. Jim is even more opposed. “Are you nuts!? Why would I want to make myself need Viagra?”

Please help Tim educate his friends about vasectomy and tubal ligation. Explain what each procedure does, precisely, and why their fears are unfounded.

Explanation / Answer

During a vasectomy, man’s genital is numbed with local anaesthesia and make one or two small incisions. The vas deferent, responsible for transporting sperm from the testes, is severed, and the ends are either stitched or tied. Thus, man’s body continues to produce sperms, but they are not ejaculated in semen rather reabsorbed back into the body.

During a tubectomy, woman’s fallopian tubes are either cut entirely and tied or blocked. This procedure prevents her eggs from reaching the uterus and hence prevent fertilization. The procedure uses spinal anaesthesia, and two incisions are made below navel allowing to doctors to access woman’s fallopian tubes directly.

Vasectomies are less invasive than tubectomies as tubectomy is considered a major abdominal surgery. Recovery times for vasectomies are shorter, and there is lesser the risk of complications than tubectomies. Women, who have undergone tubectomy, are at a higher risk of bladder problems in the future.

Either of these procedures does not impact the sexual performance of individuals. However, there may bet physiological effect man or women feel while going these procedures. Overall, regarding both cost and safety, vasectomies are a much smarter choice than tubectomies.
