please tell me how this is done

7. (5 points) The location of five deletions have been mapped to a Drosophila chromosome, as shown in the following deletion map. Recessive muations a, b, c, and d are known to be located in the same region as the deletions but the order of the mutations on the chromosome is not known. Drosophila Chromosome Deletion 1 Deletion 2 Deletion 3 Deletion 4 Deletion 5 When flies homozygous for the recessive mutation are crossed with flies heterozygous for the deletions, the following results are obtained in which "m" represents recovery of flies with a mutant phenotype and "+" represents recovery of only flies with a wildtype phenotype. Use the data from the table below to determine the order of the genes (a, b, c and d) on the chromosome. Write the gene order in the box below the table. Mutants Deletions 2

Explanation / Answer

m = mutant phenotype.

When F1 of a cross between two mutants shows mutant phenotype, both the mutants are said to be allelic. i.e. they are mutations in the same gene (this is applicable only to recessive mutations).

+ = WT phenotype.

When F1 of a cross between two mutants does not show mutant phenotype, both the mutants are said to be non-allelic. i.e. they are mutations in different genes (this is applicable only to recessive mutations).

The crossing of any mutant with deletion one produces F1 with mutant phenotype indicating that all these mutations are located in the given genomic region.

b and d are located in region 2.

None of the mutations are located in region 3.

b is located in region 4.

c is located in region 5.

So, the order of genes is given by

a-c-d-b
