Question
An automobile with a mass of 1556 kg is parked on a moving flatbed railcar; the flatbed is 1.5 m above the ground. The railcar has a mass of 36,960 kg and is moving to the right at a constant speed v = 8.0 m/s on a frictionless rail. The automobile then accelerates to the left, leaving the railcar at a speed of 22 m/s with respect to the ground. When the automobile lands, what is the distance D between it and the left end of the railcar? See the figure.
Explanation / Answer
1) lets calculate the dstance of a car relative to the takeoff point x=vt y=yo-gt^2/2 --> t^2=2*y0/g=0.3 -->t=0.553 sec --> x=22*0.553=12.17 m (relative to the takeoff point) now during this time the platform moved: x2=0.553*8=4.42 m -> the distance will be 4.42+12.7=17.12 m
